RE: Mechanical pins in symbol that are changed to normal pins do not update.

This is more than likely because if the pins are now normal they will be driven from a pin on a symbol in the schematic. You will need to update the schematic to add the extra pins then update the netlist and import. You may also need to delete the part and then re-place it
